Change Makers United, Inc. (CMU) typically uses donations from the annual Give Local fundraiser to supplement Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) and mentoring youth programs. This year, we will also use monetary funds to mitigate pandemic induced community needs.  Some people have responded to the pandemic by purchasing excessive amounts meat, milk, water, and nonperishable items. Shortly after items are restocked, aisles are left bare in most grocery stores, farmer’s markets, and convenience stores. The food items being purchased at rapid and high rates include foods that are provided by The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).  SNAP and WIC are food assistance programs that provide assistance for people living in poverty by providing access to a variety of different foods that meet nutritional needs.  However, when people that do not qualify for SNAP or WIC purchase these foods, families living in poverty can no longer access necessary provisions.

CMU needs your assistance to ensure the provision of food and snack bags for underprivileged families.  Additionally, we are launching a (virtual) early literacy and early numeracy program this summer!  As the pandemic is still very real, CMU seeks to provide families with disinfectants (sprays and/or wipes).  In addition to combating hunger and promoting academic excellence, your contributions will help curb the spread of the coronavirus.
