CMU Academic Academy
Under CMU's Academic Academy we provide tutoring, parent advocate, truancy prevention, mentoring, life-skills coaching, and educational consulting services.
CMU offers educational services to everyone; however, we are not reticent in our focus on marginalized and impoverished families. We believe education will bring change to the systemic factors contributing to community development delay in Hampton Roads. Contrary to popular belief, the benefits of education are not limited to monetary compensation; education can prevent the transmission of poverty between generations. Additionally, education has a documented affect on health, nutrition, and economic development - all attributes of CMU's mission to empower and invoke positive, sustainable change in today's youth.
Tutoring services help promote student academic success.
Parent advocacy services provide resources to help parents of children with special needs prepare for meetings, prioritize their child's needs, build good relationships, document issues and concerns, and utilize other advocacy strategies.
Our mentoring services target youth in need to reduce gun violence, aid gang prevention, promote awareness and acceptance of differences, and encourage integrity and respect. CMU's mentoring program is responsive to community needs; the program functions through the implementation of proactive intervention strategies for youth development. CMU aims to work with K-12 students living in single-parent households as a result of incarceration, death, or other undisclosed factors. We must equip our future leaders with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to achieve success.
Our life-skills coaching services are developed to empower individuals by increasing their confidence and competence. We aim to prepare those receiving services by providing community resource linkage and coaching them through financial management, self-confidence, job preparation, school support, social skills, and holistic living.
Educational consulting services provide training and professional developments to educational personnel.
Poverty plays a role in children's health, social-emotional well-being, their ability to learn, and the opportunity to receive a quality education (Jacobs, 2013).

CMU Wellness ACADEMY
Under CMU's Wellness Academy, we provide nutrition, fitness, yoga, mental health skill-building, therapeutic day treatment, and intensive in-home counseling services.
Food insecurities have a direct correlation to nutrient deficiencies that lead to learning and developmental deficits (especially in children); this can yield long-term effects including low achievement in school, emotional problems, and overall poor health. In addition to food insecurity, those who do not have access to a balanced and nutritious diet are 76% more likely to have deficits in behavioral, language, and cognitive development. Our nutrition coach provides the following services:
- Meal Planning services
- Meal Prepping services
- Health & Wellness consultation(s)
- Nutritional Planning (includes meal plan development, suggested recipes and curated grocery lists)
- 4-week Health and Wellness Workshop (includes weekly consultative meetings to address inquiries, progress, and adjustments to dietary plans)
In addition to nutritional services, we provide fitness coaching and subsequent amenities to guide CMU families in retooling their lifestyles with proper exercise and certified guidance (i.e., Instructor-led fitness boot camps, consultative workout plans, and virtual exercise courses).
Some children are plagued with stress and anxiety that creates a bridge to misbehavior and poor decision-making. Yoga provides a response rooted in the promotion of spiritual and ascetic discipline; a part of which breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures is widely-practiced for health and relaxation. Tomorrow's leaders must condition their minds to focus and introspectively find clarity in themselves. Our society has evolved to be exhaustively engaging, constantly interacting, and consistently processing information; fortunately for all, our yoga courses help to detoxify those thoughts and encourage the rewards of positive mental health.
Mental health skill-building services provide a multitude of interventions designed to help individuals live a more independent lifestyle by improving their overall daily functioning. Services are designed to assist individuals with skill-building in order to thrive successfully in their own community. Services also address teaching skills to manage underlying emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and psychotic symptoms.
Intensive in-home counseling services are home-based mental health services that are designed to meet each child and family's unique needs through crisis management, intensive case management, counseling, family therapy, and skills training.
The primary goal of the service is to prevent out-of-home placement or provide transition services from out-of-home placement back into the home.
*According to the Urban Child Institute (UCI), children in the United States are mostly safe from the severe hunger often seen in poor and developing countries. However, many children live in families that do not have a consistent, dependable supply of healthy food; researchers refer to this as food insecurity. Hampton Roads' impoverished do not suffer as much from hunger as they do from food insecurity. Food-insecure communities avoid hunger by choosing cheaper, more filling food, as opposed to costly, nutritious foods; this results in a diet that provides inadequate nutrients for the healthy growth and development of our future leaders.
A family is considered food-insecure if they frequently
• Are unable to afford balanced meals
• Reduce the size of meals due to monetary concerns
• Reduce the quality their diet due to monetary concerns
